Arrival and Departure TimesWe expect that all participants will arrive on the afternoon or evening of Wednesday 6 July 2005, and check into their housing. They will register either that evening at the Welcoming BBQ, or the next morning before the first lecture. The school ends at lunchtime on Sunday 10 July 2005, and participants will be expected to check out and depart that day. If anyone is either arriving and departing at a different time, please let us know immediately, by contacting the local organizer Todd Brun at tbrun@usc.edu.Getting to USCIf you are driving to USC, you can find driving directions here. The nearest airports to USC are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or Burbank Airport. From these airports you can get to USC by getting a shuttle, taking a cab (quite expensive, though not as bad if shared by several passengers), or renting a car. Getting to USC by public transportation is also possible, but not easy. For more information, you can consult the USC web site, or email the local organizer Todd Brun at tbrun@usc.edu. Please note that the summer school is at the University Park Campus (UPC); do NOT go to the Health Sciences Campus (HSC) by mistake! The University Park Campus is bounded by Vermont Avenue on the West, Exposition Boulevard on the South, Figueroa Street on the East, and Jefferson Boulevard on the North. You can easily find it on a map.Finding Your Way Around the CampusThe USC campus is big, but being located in a city is reasonably compact. Most of the activities of the school will take place in the southwest portion of the campus (where most of the Engineering School is located). We have a map of the campus with important locations marked. Please note that all buildings at USC have a three-letter code, which should be prominently marked on the building; this also makes them easy to find in the map key. This code usually is closely related to the name of the building.Housing and MealsStudents who are staying on campus will be housed in the International Residential Complex (IRC), otherwise known as Parkside (because it is opposite Exposition Park). Meals will be taken in the Parkside Dining Hall. Local students and lecturers will also be provided with a meal ticket for the Parkside Dining Hall, so that all participants at the school can eat together.Lecturers will be staying in the Radisson at 540 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles California 90007, right across from the USC campus. LecturesLectures will be given in Zumberge Hall of Science (ZHS) room 159. Please note that this building was recently renamed! On many USC Campus Maps it will be labeled SCI. The schedule of lectures is available on this website.Welcoming BBQ and RegistrationOn the arrival night, Wednesday 6 July 2005, there will be a Welcoming BBQ at the Upstairs Commons restaurant. Students can pick up their registration packets there, or the next morning before the first lecture.Excursions
The SQuInT Summer School will include two excursions. The first will
be to the King Tut Exhibit at the LA County
Museum of Art (LACMA), on Friday evening 8 July 2005. Tickets
to the show will be provided. The second excursion will be to the
3rd Street Pier in Santa Monica,
on Saturday afternoon 9 July 2005. Transportation to the excursions
will be by bus, picking up in front of Parking Structure D (PSD) on 34th
Street. The excursions are optional; but since the King Tut exhibit
rarely leaves Egypt, we'd encourage everyone to go. |
