About our Logo:The Information Physics Logo represents the Bloch sphere of a two-level quantum system, called a qubit, as a hot-air balloon. The qubit is the basic information- processing element for quantum information. The essence of quantum information lies in the multitude of quantum states available to a qubit as a consequence of the superposition principle of quantum mechanics; these states are portrayed at a coarse-grained level as the multi-colored squares that decorate the balloon. The superposition principles endows a qubit with far more information-processing power than a classical bit. This information-processing power is harnessed in a quantum computer, where many interacting qubits are able to perform computations more efficiently than any classical computer. Unlike the balloon, which is lifted by hot air, work on quantum information is powered by the efforts of hundreds of researchers worldwide, including the Information Physics Group at UNM. The Logo was drawn by Elizabeth Hunt-Klinksiek, who worked from a photo of a hot-air balloon that participated in the annual Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. The Logo accompanies you as you navigate our Web Page, serving as a friendly reminder that you're visiting UNM Information Physics.
